Independent Life

Base House

Base House, SWALLOW's training house, offers training in independent living skills to people with learning disabilities. Base House is often our members' first taste of independence; it offers overnight stays for members to learn a range of skills including cooking, cleaning, budgeting, shopping and personal development.

We are delighted that Base House as developed links with Fosse Way School. Young people who attend the school stay overnight at the Base House and experience life away from home.

Supported Housing

We are very proud of our supported housing in Redfield Road, and our new housing project The Hawthorns, both in Midsomer Norton, they are a model of best practice.

We continue to look for further developments and supported housing projects, so that more people with learning disabilities can live independently with the knowledge that help is on hand when needed. Our support workers are trained to step in when required and to know when to step back to support a tenant to increase their own independence.

Quote from Redfield Road tenant:

I love living at Redfield Road. I love learning to cook new recipes with Linda. Sometimes I need her help, other times I try to manage by myself, but I always know that the staff are there if I need them.

Debbie Metcalf, Redfield Road tenant.

Quote from the Hawthorns:

My name is Sarah Stanton Hobbs. I have just moved from Paulton to Midsomer Norton. I have got a new flat round the corner from Redfield Road, it is called The Hawthorns. I am really pleased to have received such a good welcome from SWALLOW.
