In Conversation with a Friend of SWALLOW

As part of our 30th Anniversary celebrations this year, we are hoping to find 30 new Friends of SWALLOW, to help keep our work thriving for the next 30 years and beyond. We would like to thank everyone who has signed up so far.

We wanted to speak to one of our current Friends, Kate, to find out what being a Friend of SWALLOW means to her.

Why did you choose to become a Friend of SWALLOW?

Kate: I feel very strongly about the work SWALLOW does, working with each member to help them reach their full potential. There is a wide range of activities on offer, to suit everyone's needs and interests. Many of the activities, such as the cafes and the gardening, benefit the community as well as the members.

Did you know about our services and our members before you became a Friend?

Kate: I became aware of SWALLOW mainly via the cafes, but didn't know much about the full range of opportunities offered to members. If found myself keen to find out more.

How does donating to SWALLOW make you feel?

Kate: I feel that, as well as helping to provide activities and work for members, that I am contributing to helping local people recognise the potential that people with learning disabilities have. I also enjoy seeing the satisfaction felt by members when they accomplish activities that they may have thought they weren't able to do.

What would you say to others who may be thinking of becoming a Friend of SWALLOW?

Kate: Go for it! It doesn't matter how much or little you can give - it all helps.

Would you like to share a fun fact / some more information about yourself with us?

Kate: I spend most of my spare time doing printmaking and painting. When I'm in my home studio, I feel like a 6 year old in a sweet shop!

We would like to thank Kate so much for all her support, along with all of our current Friends of SWALLOW. It's great to know how much pleasure she gets from supporting our charity.
