Supporting Mental Health at SWALLOW

At SWALLOW Charity, we believe that good mental health is vital for everyone — especially for people with learning disabilities, who may face extra challenges in their daily lives. As we mark World Mental Health Day on 10th October 2025, we’re proud to celebrate the ways we support the wellbeing of both our members and staff every day of the year.


It’s important to remember that mental health and learning disabilities are not the same thing. A learning disability affects how a person understands information and communicates, while mental health relates to emotional wellbeing. However, people with learning disabilities can be more likely to experience mental health difficulties due to the barriers and challenges they may face — such as social isolation, discrimination or lack of understanding from others. For our members with learning disabilities in Somerset, mental health support is woven into everything we do. From social clubs and creative activities to supported employment and independent living, we provide safe, inclusive spaces where people can build confidence, friendships and life skills. Feeling part of a welcoming community is key to good mental wellbeing, and at SWALLOW, everyone is encouraged to be themselves and feel valued.


We also recognise that caring for others starts with looking after ourselves. That’s why we actively support the mental health of our dedicated staff team through flexible, part-time working options and by promoting a healthy work-life balance. These approaches help ensure our team can deliver the best support while maintaining their own wellbeing.

To further strengthen our commitment, SWALLOW now has four trained Mental Health First Aiders who offer a listening ear, guidance and practical help whenever it’s needed. They help create a workplace culture where it’s okay to talk openly about mental health — and to reach out for support.


This World Mental Health Day, we’re proud to shine a light on the importance of mental health for people with learning disabilities, their families, and those who support them. Together, we’re building a compassionate community where everyone can thrive — in mind, body, and spirit.
